How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays an important duty as your furnace prepares to warm your home.
Here’s what occurs after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board starts running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and brings in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that sufficient air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and provides heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails
When your pressure switch isn’t operating promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off as a safety precaution.
Your furnace will show you something is incorrect with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may see quick flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
